Netball trials followed a slightly different format this year. A new website was created for UBNC and new Bristol students keen to play competitive netball were encouraged to register their interest on the website. These students were then invited to UBNC training sessions to train alongside our teams to give us an extra opportunity to see everyone play. Furthermore these sessions were filmed to allow further analysis in case we had missed anything during the session.
Selected players were then invited to attend either 1/2s, 3/4s or 5/6s trials. At UBNC we aim to encourage participation for as many people as we can and although we have one of the largest number of teams that play competitively in BUCs in the whole university we cannot fit all the girls that trial into these. Hence, any girls we saw that showed potential but could not fit into one of our competitive teams this year were invited to train with our development squad. This squad trains weekly and is observed frequently by our coaches and players to scout any players that can be moved into one of our teams should an opening occur.
Before our team trials we host first year trials. Girls are able to sign up for these at our stand at Welcome Fair and were given a choice to register their interest to play competitively of socially. If they chose to play socially, girls were invited to UBNC taster sessions hosted at Coombe Dingle and run by members of UBNC that advised the girls on all the different opportunities to get involved in netball at Bristol such as Get Active, intramural netball or our development squad. Girls who chose to play competitively were invited to first year trials which were split over the weekend and took up the majority of the day. Girls trailing were asked to do some drills and the briefly put into match play so UBNC members could get a good chance to see everyone play before inviting girls to the appropriate team trials. Any girls who did make it to team trials were advised to go to Get Active netball sessions for the opportunity to still play and experience netball at University.
All in all, we were extremely pleased to see so many girls trial for netball (500 people signed up at Welcome Fair). Demonstrating that interest to play netball at University is extremely high and ever-growing. Please see the final team selections below. We are all excited extremely for a challenging season ahead and look forward to seeing each of our teams bond and develop as the year goes on.
